Inclement Weather Reminder– With the landfall of Hurricane Matthew a remote possibility for Hampton Roads, the Parish is reminded that safety is more important than your presence in the physical Sanctuary. Notification will be sent as early as possible about services but if you feel unsafe attending church please stay home. The rector will attempt to get to church but may stay home depending on the conditions.

A Season of Prayer: For an Election – This election season has been among the most contentious in recent memory. But whatever our politics, as Christians we always have something we can do. We can pray. For the 30 days leading up to the election, Forward Movement is inviting Episcopalians and all others to join us in a time of prayer. The season begins on October 9. For more information, see this webpage.

Bishop Visitation – Thank you to everyone for bringing such wonderful food to the potluck last week. Thanks to Marcella and crew for setting up the parish hall. Anne’s centerpiece was just wonderful. Thank you to everyone sticking around to help clean up afterwards. Cleaning up is the hardest part and takes the most hands.

Sermon for October 2:
Save the Date: Organ Dedication – We will dedicate the Dr. Arthur Abbitt Kirk memorial organ during our October Twilight at St. John’s with… event on October 30 beginning at 4:00 pm. We will have instrumental and choral music, readings, prayers, and a blessing during that time. Please invite your friends and community to come and hear the wonderful sound our “new” organ makes.

Website Changes – Have you visited our website recently? You might want to stop by to see some of the changes.

Church Quiz – Over the coming weeks we will have a “Church Quiz” as part of our announcements and e-News. All are invited to think about and answer the week’s question. Answers will be provided the following week.
Last week’s question and answer: Question: Through whom does the Church carry out its mission? Answer: The church carries out its mission through the ministry of all its members. (BCP p. 855)
This week’s question: Who are the ministers of the Church? Look for the answer next week.

Formation Classes – This week we will discuss our Old Testament reading, Jeremiah 29:1, 4-7, “Jeremiah’s Letter to the Exiles in Babylon.” Next week’s class will discuss our Old Testament reading Jeremiah 31:27-34, “’Individual Retribution’ and ‘A New Covenant’.” All are invited to join the conversation in the Parish Hall from 9:15 to 10:15 am.

Sunday’s Psalm – This Sunday we will read the psalm in unison.

Hospitality hour Sign-up – The sign-up sheet is on the bulletin board; please sign-up for an upcoming Sunday. If you would like to help but cannot provide all the items for coffee hour/lemonade on the lawn any assistance, even a single item, will be graciously accepted.

Upcoming Parish Events – Oct. 8 – James River Rug Hookers; Oct 9: Outreach committee meeting; Oct 10: Columbus Day; Office closed; Oct 11: Vestry meeting; Parish Hall; Oct 15: Village Garden Club; Parish Hall; Oct 16: Lake Prince Woods Vespers Service (Rector preaching); Oct 17: G. Thought for the week – Faith: Faith is not believing that certain claims or statements about God are true. Genuine faith presumes a relationship with God. It implies a radical trust in God, faithfulness in one’s relationship with God, and a way of seeing the world as life-giving and nourishing rather than as hostile and threatening.
