375th Anniversary Open House – We will hold our Community 375th Anniversary Celebration and Open House on Sunday September 17. There will be a few things needed to make the event a big success. Carroll Frohman is coordinating refreshments. We need a couple volunteers who are willing to offer tours of the sanctuary (using cue cards if desired).

Worship Volunteers – Please consider volunteering to assist with worship. It would be helpful to have a few more people who can assist as a Reader or Usher. Ushering, while a simple task, is an important function of our church’s ministry. The ushers are the face of the Parish on Sunday.

Vestry Meeting Summary – Your vestry met this past Tuesday and discussed many important topics. There will be a brief handout in the order of worship Sunday. Key take-aways include:
* Our continuing commitment to Oakland Elementary School
* Financial picture: expenses are ahead of income; a reminder to be current with your pledge.
* Blessing of the Pets on October 1
* Fall clean-up on October 28

Flowers – Thank you to all who have signed up for flowers this year. Due to the new supplier, there is a slight reduction in cost. We are charged $92.50 for flowers, and flowers last for two weeks. If you have more questions, please contact Lynn.

Message from the Presiding Bishop – The Presiding Bishop, The Most Rev. Michael Curry, sent a message regarding the state of emotions following the recent catastrophes: Hurricanes Harvey and Irma; the earthquake in Mexico; wildfires in the West; and political unrest around the nation. Please take an opportunity to view his message at: http://publicaffairs.cmail20.com/t/r-l-jldtkyid-wikldtlc-x/.

Church Quiz – Over the coming weeks we will have a “Church Quiz” as part of our announcements and e-News. All are invited to think about and answer the week’s question. Answers will be provided the following week.
Last week’s question and answer: Question What do we mean by the resurrection of the body? Answer: We mean that God will raise us from death in the fullness of our being, that we may live with Christ in the communion of the saints. (BCP 862)
This week’s question: What is the communion of saints? Look for the answer next week.

Formation Classes – This week we will discuss our Old Testament reading Exodus 14:19-31, “’Crossing the Red Sea’ and ‘The Pursuers Drowned’.” Next week we will discuss our Gospel reading Matthew 20:1-16, “The Laborers in the Vineyard.” All are invited to join the conversation in the Parish Hall from 9:15 to 10:15 am.

Sunday’s Psalm – This Sunday we sing the portion of the Psalter together using a metrical version of the Psalter from A New Metrical Psalter by Christopher Webber as we sing Psalm 114 together. The Psalm will be set to Hymn 297, “Descend, O Spirit, purging flame” (Erhalt uns, Herr) from the Hymnal. The words and music will be found on a bulletin insert.

Hospitality hour Sign-up – The sign-up sheet is on the bulletin board; please sign-up for an upcoming Sunday. If you would like to help but cannot provide all the items for coffee hour/lemonade on the lawn any assistance, even a single item, will be graciously accepted.

Upcoming Parish Events – Ongoing: Tuesdays – Boy Scouts meeting. Sep. 17 – Anniversary open house; Sep. 18 – G. F. W. C. Junto Women’s Group; Sep. 26 – Card Crafters; Sep. 30 – Red Cross Luncheon.

Thought for the week – Trust: At times we will be privileged to witness evil’s defeat. But it will not always be so. Often we will have to wait in hope, trusting God for a victory we ourselves may never see.

Society of Saint John the Evangelist
