Oakland Christian UCC Fall Fest – Oakland Christian UCC will hold their 23rd Annual Fall Fest on Saturday November 4 from 9:00 am – 2:00 pm. There will be a wide variety of things to purchase in preparation for your holiday season including: a Silent Auction, Grandma’s Pantry, Candy Shop, Baked goods, Brunswick Stew, Chicken Salad, Pimento Cheese, and outside vendors. Stop by and have a great time.

Worship Volunteers – Please consider volunteering to assist with worship. It would be helpful to have a few more people who can assist as a Reader or Usher. Ushering, while a simple task, is an important function of our church’s ministry. The ushers are the face of the Parish on Sunday.

Flowers – Thank you to all who have signed up for flowers this year. Due to the new supplier, there is a slight reduction in cost. We are charged $92.50 for flowers, and flowers last for two weeks. If you have more questions, please contact Lynn.

Church Quiz – Over the coming weeks we will have a “Church Quiz” as part of our announcements and e-News. All are invited to think about and answer the week’s question. Answers will be provided the following week.
Last week’s question and answer: Question What, then, is our assurance as Christians? Answer: Our assurance as Christians is that nothing, not even death, shall separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord. Amen. (BCP 862)
This week’s question: What is the definition of the word “Eucharist”? Look for the answer next week.

Formation Classes – This week we will discuss our Gospel reading Exodus 20:1-4, 7-9, 12-20, “The Ten Commandments.” Next week we will discuss our Gospel reading Matthew 22:1-14, “The Parable of the Wedding Banquet.” All are invited to join the conversation in the Parish Hall from 9:15 to 10:15 am.

Sunday’s Psalm – This Sunday we sing the portion of the Psalter together using a metrical version of the Psalter from A New Metrical Psalter by Christopher Webber as we sing Psalm 19 together. The Psalm will be set to Hymn 526, “Let saints on earth in concert sing” (Dundee) from the Hymnal. The words and music will be found on a bulletin insert.

Hospitality hour Sign-up – The sign-up sheet is on the bulletin board; please sign-up for an upcoming Sunday. If you would like to help but cannot provide all the items for coffee hour/lemonade on the lawn any assistance, even a single item, will be graciously accepted.

Upcoming Parish Events – Ongoing: Tuesdays – Boy Scouts meeting. Oct. 9 – Columbus Day Holiday; Oct. 14 – James River Rug Hookers; Oct. 16 – Junto Women’s Club; Oct. 17 – Vestry Meeting; Oct. 18 – Town Hall Meeting.

Thought for the week – Children of God: The truest thing about us is not our sins, not the mistakes we have made, not the pain we have caused others. The truest thing about you and me is that we are God’s beloved children, fearfully and wonderfully made in God’s image – and created for Life and Love.

– Br. Geoffrey Tristram, SSJE
Society of Saint John the Evangelist
