Hurricane Florence preparations and safety – As Hurricane Florence approaches the North Carolina Coast as a Category 4 Hurricane, please make all necessary preparations for heavy rains and flooding. Hampton Roads may be spared from the worst part of the winds but there are predictions for up to 6 inches of rain.
Most of our cities in Hampton Roads have emergency shelters, the only cities I don’t know about are Chesapeake and Smithfield. Regardless, this hurricane is nothing to fool around with. Please comply with all evacuations, warnings, and watches.
After the storm passes we will make a decision about worship on Sunday but first and foremost, your safety is paramount. As part of our community life, please contact me or someone from church if you need assistance. Bishop Hollerith has requested the parishes contact him with our status after the storm.

Sunday Worship – Safety is paramount – if you don’t feel absolutely safe on the road stay put. I will contact people through email as it’s available, via our website, our Facebook page, our Twitter account (@rectorstjohns10), and I will update the voice mail at church. Stay safe regardless and we’ll take care of worship when God allows it.

Vestry Election – It’s not too soon to prayerfully consider if you are being called to serve on the Vestry. At the end of the year we will have 2 people rotate off the Vestry, Anne and Leone. If you are unaware of the requirements to serve on the Vestry please contact the Rector.

Yard Cleanup – Thank you to Charles for cutting the back part of the property and for doing some spraying between the church and the pond and road. It is nice to see the back yard and have a better view of the property.

Sunday’s Psalm – We will recite the psalm on Sunday.

Church Quiz – Over the coming weeks we will have a “Church Quiz” as part of our announcements and e-News. All are invited to think about and answer the week’s question. Answers will be provided the following week.
Last week’s question and answer: Question Concerning the book of Mark: which testament is it in? What division is it in? How many chapters does it have? Answer: The book of Mark is found in the Gospels and Acts of the Apostles division of the New Testament; it has 16 chapters.
This week’s question: Concerning the book of Matthew: which testament is it in? What division is it in? How many chapters does it have? Look for the answer next week.

Hospitality hour Sign-up – The sign-up sheet is on the bulletin board; please sign-up for an upcoming Sunday. If you would like to help but cannot provide all the items for coffee hour/lemonade on the lawn any assistance, even a single item, will be graciously accepted.

Upcoming Parish Events – Tuesdays through June: Boy Scouts (7:00 – 8:30 pm); Sep. 18 – Vestry Meeting; Sep. 24 – GFWC Junto Women’s Group; Sep. 25 – Card Crafters.

Thought for the weekCommunity: We’re not good at talking to people with whom we disagree, especially strongly. We don’t listen. We try to stop them, shut them down. But Jesus says, “No.” Don’t make such assumptions. “Whoever is not against us is for us.”
