Fall is really upon us now – and life in Chuckatuck is changing. A hearty group headed out to do a lot of cleaning and tidying around the churchyard, nothing as remarkable as cutting a tree down but things that make our door a little more welcoming. We look at ourselves with open eyes to see how we present ourselves to those around us – work to be done but work accomplished to further God’s message of hope and reconciliation.
As we gathered for worship we offered prayers for healing and listened to stories about God’s interaction and response to humans who are “full of themselves”. God responded to Job, not question for question, but asked Job to remember the details of the everyday are beyond Job’s comprehension, so the monumental will often make less sense to Job. Our gospel showed a glimpse of disciples who still don’t get Jesus and his mission. Even after he tells them directly they are focused on the world not being with God. They ask for something (a place of honor) and Jesus reminds them what they ask for may actually happen but the route from here to there may be different than they hope for. But asking for something isn’t shunned; simply reframed to keep the eye on God not on the world.
