May you be filled with God’s gracious presence on this bright, sunny, chilly Sunday at the end of February. We celebrate today as we close our Epiphany journey (the opening of our eyes to God’s presence around us) and look towards our Lenten journey that begins Wednesday. Thankfully, there will be pancakes and fellowship Tuesday night before Ash Wednesday – so come join us on the way to a fruitful Lenten journey.
Today is Transfiguration Sunday (not the Feast of the Transfiguration – but that’s a different discussion). Our scripture today focused on the revelation of God to humans through time. Our Hebrew Scripture reading was from Exodus and dealt with Moses’ 40-day journey getting the 10 Commandments. Our Psalm reminds us that God is our refuge and, as long as we trust that, the truth of God’s promises will be realized. Second Peter told the story of the Transfiguration which was presented in Matthew.
Some takeaways from today: Whether we know it or not, our participation in the Transfiguration (which is ongoing) forces us to evaluate what we claim as truth about the Transfiguration. We are invited to sit and reflect on the fantastic of the Transfiguration because it takes time to make sense of the revelation and if we share the revelation immediately we might overwhelm. Our part of the Transfiguration story centers on affirming God’s presence, then, now, and in the future. And our belief in the truth of the Transfiguration helps us build the family of God.
