Jesus spoke to us through the story of the Temple tax and the question from the Pharisees and Herodians: is it legal to pay the tax to the emperor. Jesus affirms to those in his time that the life of the faithful is a balance of the obligation to God and the obligation to be a citizen in the world. We continue to be challenged with our ability to balance the need to be a participant in community, to advocate for what we feel is best (while realizing that the ones who are on “the other side” are responding in kind), and to be faithful to our obligation to God. Not an easy problem to solve but we are reminded that God helps us answer if we listen.
