In worship our journey in the book of Genesis continued. Today’s lesson related Jacob’s toil for Rachel only to be given Leah instead. Jacob toiled for his first love, Rachel, willingly because that was what was supposed to be. The Psalm today reminds us that we are called to remind ourselves about God’s providence and to give thanks for the ability to remember all that God does for us. Paul’s letter to the Romans gives us the reminder – we are bound to Christ by our profession and that we can’t expect to be treated any way except how Jesus was treated. But Paul also reminds us that there is no thing that can separate us from God’s love, except by our own choice. Our gospel reading from Matthew was a whirlwind collection of 6 parables about what the kingdom of heaven was like. But the most pressing reminder of the parables was the final statement – those who remember the truth of God’s story must tell the old stories and interpret the old truth into this present moment.
