In worship, we celebrated the Feast of the Presentation of Jesus in the temple. For most the celebration was a first, I have no recollection of having the Feast of the Presentation celebrated on Sunday (or at all) before. Our worship and scripture helped us hear the story of redemption from beginning to end. Malachi told us that we would be refined by the messenger in preparation for the coming of the Messiah. Our psalmist reminded us that we are doorkeepers and the work we do is both welcoming to worship and sending forth to evangelize the world. The New Testament served to remind us that Jesus came to help humans (not angels) and amplified the gospel reading – that our patience and steadfast perseverance as we wait for God’s return will be rewarded. But we have to both welcome and wait before we head out to work for God. That is our challenge today and forever.
