Greetings from Chuckatuck on the 7th Sunday of Easter, Sunday of Memorial Day Weekend, and the next-to-last Sunday of May. It was, and is, a bit grey outside but thankfully, no rain. The clover has bounced back from the last cutting and the butter cups are starting to re-emerge. And the first signs of this year’s chestnuts are peeking out. We had a successful blood drive on Thursday and helped make a difference in our community. It is hard to believe we are one week away from Pentecost and that our regular worship at the pond and potluck will be postponed for a while. Yet, we continue to worship and be faithful to our calling.
In worship we bridge between Ascension on Thursday and Pentecost next Sunday. A recurring theme of today was the realities of being people who exist in “the now” and “the not yet”. This past season has been a good example of the conundrum we live in. The Psalmist reminds us that God will run off those who are opposed to God’s plan and that God’s power is beyond our understanding. The lesson from Acts is the story of the Ascension and the reminder that the work we do didn’t stop when Jesus ascended, we are called to fortify ourselves for the long haul. The gospel reading from John was one of the longest recorded prayers by Jesus and affirms our connection to God through Jesus. Today’s sermon was based on the Epistle from Peter – that we are called to practice our faith, to cast our anxieties to God, to trust that God will take what we give and return something that is better and nourishing for the journey. Our relationship with God is not a relief from cares, just an assurance that we won’t go it alone along the way.
