In worship we began by being reminded that Jesus is the cornerstone of the Church and that the apostles (and us) are ones who are called to share witness to God’s grace and offer hope to the hopeless. Our Hebrew scripture reading was the story of Elijah being whisked away to heaven and Elisha receiving a double portion of Elijah’s spirit (and ultimately his resolve). The Psalmist sang a song that reminds us to cry to God when we feel overrun. But not just to cry out but also to trust God’s response will lead us where we are supposed to go. Paul’s letter to the Galatians invites us to stand firm in what we know is right. But to not use the freedom we receive through Jesus to oppress those with whom we do not agree. Paul reminds us that we are called to have joy, love and patience.
Our sermon was based on the gospel from Luke where Jesus has his face set to Jerusalem and completing his mission of reconciliation. We hear about the disciples who want to do God’s job (punishment) and those who are called who want to wait to act – when now is the time to act. We just need to do our job and let God do God’s job.
