In worship we celebrated the Feast of Pentecost, often referred to as the birthday of the Church. Our collect reminded us that God’s Holy Spirit has come into our hearts to help us be a light for the world. We are also reminded to be ones who comfort those we meet because the Holy Spirit dwells in us. Our Psalmist sang a song that tells of the greatness of God and God’s works. But God isn’t just about work, God created the Leviathan for the sport of it – because the world needs fun too. Our gospel reading was John’s account of Philip asking Jesus to show [humanity] the Father. Jesus relates that the works done are the sign of God and that those who receive the Spirit are able to do great things too.
The sermon delivered merged the Hebrew scripture lesson – the Tower of Babel; with the lesson from Acts – the coming of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost. The “unconventional” reminder of these lessons is God created humanity with diversity in mind. When humans try to make things into what they want, God resets those who have gone astray. But, even when we are called to be united, each person is still unique and shares a necessary, unique story of their relationship with God. The great thing: diversity wins!
