As we returned to the “standard” lectionary in worship today we began the preparation for Advent with the statement from the Collect writer, that scripture has been caused to be formed for us to read, mark, learn, and inwardly digest. In our diving into scripture, God offers us a glimpse into the heavenly realm on earth. Our gospel reading from Mark is the story of Jesus’ revelation that the things of this earth that are held in high esteem, big buildings and lush surroundings, will not survive to eternity. When the old will pass away isn’t known nor can be predicted, but the old will pass away. The letter to the Hebrews reminds us that we have confidence to be able to stand in worship and awe of God by the sacrifice made by Jesus. By his sacrifice we are able to have hope for the future based on something of worth, the promise of God in Christ.

Our sermon today was focused on the readings from Hebrew scripture in the first book of Samuel. The stories read this morning are Hannah’s story and Hannah’s song. Hannah was the focus of the oppressive behavior of her rival and because of the taunting, she had lost hope. Even when she was told by her husband, Elkanah, he should be enough she found it wasn’t. Eli wasn’t helpful in confirming her standing and a child of God. Yet, when she stood up for herself, against the accepted practices of her day, was she able to realize her hope and find wholeness inside. Our job is not to make people fit into our system, rather we are called to invite people to become better related to God.

I invite your comments,
