In worship, we were reminded by the collect writer that our continued safety of worship and gathering comes through God’s goodness. Our relationship with Jesus and our attempt to be Jesus’ witness in the world keeps us safe for the long haul. Our Hebrew bible reading was another passage from the prophet Hosea. Hosea served the reminder that when the faithful turn away from God’s promises and trust in the actions and support of the world, we will fail. The Psalmist offered the reminder that God’s mercy endures for ever. The main thing believers can do to support each other is state that explicitly whenever we can. Our gospel reading from Luke reminds us that the things of today are of this world. Those who hoard the things of the world will be surprised at the final accounting, because those things mean nothing.
Our sermon was drawn from the epistle to the Colossians where Paul reminded his church-plant that they are raised with Christ because they believe in Christ and all Christ does. Paul encourages them to set aside the things of the world which prevent them from moving forward and to simply look with expectation that God is leading and will continue to lead us to the better future – even as we live in this present time.
