What a beautiful July morning and pleasant day for worship. Hard to believe I’ve been away for two, very productive and regenerative, weeks – feeding my spirit in silence and feeding my mind at the VTS library. Not just an observation from the time in silence but, graciously, connected to our scripture and reflections of the day is the truth that: silence really isn’t. God calls us to work in the midst of our noisy silence, if only we listen.
Our lessons and worship focused on two aspects of God’s story – although we could have reflected on the life and ministry of Rebekah and Isaac. We heard Paul tell the Romans that his toil alone isn’t the thing that brings about goodness – but God’s law and connection with us; and that connection brings work for us. But not the toilsome work of going it alone – rather the productive work of being an agent of change alongside Christ. That’s what we are asked to do – to be close God and do the fulfilling, even if difficult, work God calls us to.
