Hurricane Henry Relief – There are opportunities for people to assist those suffering in South Texas after Hurricane Henry. Episcopal Relief and Development is accepting donations on their website: http://www.episcopalrelief.org/what-you-can-do/give/donate-now/individual-donation. You can also add your name to the Ready-to-Serve database at: https://www.episcopalrelief.org/what-you-can-do/volunteer/ready-to-serve.

CAPS Fundraiser – The Coalition Against Poverty in Suffolk (CAPS) will hold their annual fundraiser September 9 from 4:00 – 7:00 p.m. at the First Baptist Church Fellowship Hall. The fund raiser is a “Barbecue and Fried Chicken” Fundraising dinner. Tickets will be available for purchase from the office for $10. We, as a Parish, are invited to assist by (1) selling tickets (asking us to sell 100), (2) provide homemade baked goods for the bake sale at the dinner, and (3) attend the dinner. Crabs and Brats Parish Fellowship Event – Thank you to all who came and helped celebrate this past Sunday. There were over 30 people present for Crabs and Brats. Thank you to all who provided the awesome side dishes and goodies too.

Worship Volunteers – Please consider volunteering to assist with worship. It would be helpful to have a few more people who can assist as a Reader or Usher. Ushering, while a simple task, is an important function of our church’s ministry. The ushers are the face of the Parish on Sunday.
While being a reader may seem daunting, there are ways to make that service less bothersome. Please see the Rector for more information and assistance.

Flowers – Thank you to all who have signed up for flowers this year. Due to the new supplier, there is a slight reduction in cost. We are charged $92.50 for flowers, and flowers last for two weeks. If you have more questions, please contact Lynn.

Finances and pledges – Our mid-year assessment of Parish Finances was a “good news – bad news” situation. Details will be forthcoming as the Vestry is reviewing the Treasurer’s report in detail to determine the direction for the coming months.

Save the Date – We will hold our Community 375th Anniversary Celebration and Open House on Sunday September 17. There will be a few things needed to make the event a big success. Stand by for more information.

Church Quiz – Over the coming weeks we will have a “Church Quiz” as part of our announcements and e-News. All are invited to think about and answer the week’s question. Answers will be provided the following week.
Last week’s question and answer: Question Why do we pray for the dead? Answer: We pray for them, because we still hold them in our love, and because we trust that in God’s presence those who have chosen to serve him will grow in his love, until they see him as he is. (BCP 862)
This week’s question: What do we mean by the last judgment? Look for the answer next week.

Formation Classes – This week we will discuss our Old Testament reading Exodus 3:1-15, “’Moses at the Burning Bush’ and ‘The Divine Name Revealed’.” Next week we will discuss our Old Testament reading Exodus 12:1-14, “The First Passover Instituted.” All are invited to join the conversation in the Parish Hall from 9:15 to 10:15 am.

Sunday’s Psalm – This Sunday we sing the portion of the Psalter together using a metrical version of the Psalter from A New Metrical Psalter by Christopher Webber as we sing Psalm 105:1-6, 23-26, 45c together. The Psalm will be set to Hymn 680, “O God, our help in ages past” (St. Anne) from the Hymnal. The words and music will be found on a bulletin insert.

Hospitality hour Sign-up – The sign-up sheet is on the bulletin board; please sign-up for an upcoming Sunday. If you would like to help but cannot provide all the items for coffee hour/lemonade on the lawn any assistance, even a single item, will be graciously accepted.

Upcoming Parish Events – Sep. 4 – Labor Day holiday; Sep. 9 – CAPS Fundraiser; Sep. 12 – Vestry Meeting; Sep. 17 – Anniversary open house.

Thought for the week – Eat: The impulse to serve, the impulse to love, toward kindness, toward justice is planted deep within us. In giving expression to this impulse to serve, we are fed. This is our food, the bread from heaven that gives life to the world.

– Br. Mark Brown, SSJE
