Grace and peace as we begin our journey through October. It was bright and sunny today at church with a hint of clouds looming overhead. Yet the day was perfect for the Bishop’s periodic visitation. It has been three years since he’s been here but it’s always a joy to have him here. There was a lot of energy in the congregation and a lot of ideas, thoughts, and spiritual stories shared in worship and during the potluck luncheon immediately following.

While the readings shared a common focus on the phenomenon of the Lament there was a thread in the gospel and the collect of the day that spoke to faith and being stewards of God’s bounty. As Bishop Holly reminded us today, our fear often keeps us from being faithful in our dealing with God. At times, our fear overrides our sense of calling by God to be fruitful and alive with our bounty yet, as he shared in a story, sometimes the way to insure you have enough to last a lifetime is to give more away (you’ll have to listen to see how that works out). Bottom line, holding on tight can actually cause us to lose control of the thing we hold on to.

I invite your comments,
