Chuckatuck & Oakland Thanksgiving Service – This Sunday, November 20, beginning at 4:00 pm, St. John’s will host the Community Thanksgiving Service. There will be a service of Light with readings and prayers. We will also have a Community Choir at the offertory which is being collected for the Chuckatuck Volunteer Fire Department. Our guest preacher will be the Rev. Dr. Calvin A. Lillard, the pastor at Diamond Grove Baptist Church. Please come and join our community service of thanks and praise.

Grounds Work – Please extend a hearty thank you to Bert, Charles, and Rusty for the work they did this week in the parking area. They removed the stump of the hackberry tree, moved dirt to fill the hole from the stump, moved stone from the church side of the lot to the Parish House side, and neatened up the back acreage.

Advent Lunch and Study – Please come and join us in the parish hall for fellowship, eating, and learning. There is as signup sheet in the Narthex for those wishing to prepare and host a lunch.

2017 Pledge Drive – The Vestry has completed its discussion about the shape of the budget for next year. The challenge that lies ahead, at least from the daily operations standpoint, is the expenses are projected to have a slight increase. Pledge cards will be collected no later than December 4.

A Season of Prayer: Following our Election – Almighty God, to whom we must account for all our powers and privileges:  Guide the people of the United States and of this community in the orderly transition of newly elected and reelected officials and representatives; that, by faithful administration and wise laws, the rights of all may be protected and our nation be enabled to fulfill your purposes; and help us, in the midst of our struggles for justice and truth, to confront one another without hatred or bitterness, and to work together with mutual forbearance and respect; through Jesus Christ our Lord.  Amen.

Vestry Election – Toni will rotate off the Vestry in January and we have had a volunteer to serve in her stead upon her departure.

Church Quiz – Over the coming weeks we will have a “Church Quiz” as part of our announcements and e-News. All are invited to think about and answer the week’s question. Answers will be provided the following week.
Last week’s question and answer: Question: What is the duty of all Christians? Answer: The duty of all Christians is to follow Christ; to come together week by week for corporate worship; and to work, pray, and give for the spread of the kingdom of God. (BCP p. 856)
This week’s question: What is prayer? Look for the answer next week.

Formation Classes – This week we will discuss our Old Testament reading, Jeremiah 23:1-6, “’Restoration after Exile,’ and ‘The Righteous Branch of David’.” Next week’s class will discuss our Old Testament reading Isaiah 2:1-5, “The Future House of David.” All are invited to join the conversation in the Parish Hall from 9:15 to 10:15 am.

Sunday’s Psalm – This Sunday we will read the psalm in unison.

Hospitality hour Sign-up – The sign-up sheet is on the bulletin board; please sign-up for an upcoming Sunday. If you would like to help but cannot provide all the items for coffee hour/lemonade on the lawn any assistance, even a single item, will be graciously accepted.

Upcoming Parish Events – Nov 20: Community Thanksgiving Service at St. John’s; Nov. 21: Suffolk Interdenominational Ministry Alliance (SIMA) Thanksgiving Service; Nov. 24 & 25 – Office Closed.

Thought for the week – Discontent: Out of our discontent, whatever its cause, we find ourselves dreaming of life as we think it ought to be. This combination is a tremendously powerful engine: discontent coupled with the capacity to envision better things. An engine of transformation. Which could be why we’ve been made this way.
