Memorial Blood Drive – St. John’s is hosting the Rev. Greg Ryan Memorial Blood drive on August 9 (change of date), from 2:00 – 7:00 pm, in the Parish Hall. The drive is open to the community and signup sheets for donors are forthcoming. The Virginia Blood Services (www.vablood.org) will be conducting the drive. Their goal for us is 18 units – I know, as a community, we can do better. Please help support this worthy cause.
Welcome Our Guest Organist – Please welcome Jean Marshall as our guest organist. Jean lives in Isle of Wight County and has been an organist at a Methodist Church there. She will be our guest organist until Roger returns on July 23rd.
Community Gathering – We were contacted by the Suffolk Wellness Coalition regarding our availability to provide a venue to share the video Chasing the Dragon an FBI Documentary discussing the opioid addiction epidemic in the US. The showing will be on July 19 beginning at 7:00 pm and is open to the public and will be followed by a Question and Answer period.

Card Crafters – Each month on the last Tuesday, a Card Crafters class is offered to our parishioners. It is held in the Parish Hall from 10 – 12 noon. During the class, we make three beautiful cards and enjoy the fun of crafting and relaxation. All materials are provided. Check out the bulletin board in the Parish House to see cards we have made. We ask that you bring small scissors and adhesive. We have door prizes and refreshments. Our next date is Tuesday, July 25 at 10 am. Class fee is $15. Please send an email to Alice if you would like to come or if you have any questions.
Save the Date – We will hold our Community 375th Anniversary Celebration and Open House on Sunday September 17. There will be a few things needed to make the event a big success. Stand by for more information.
Flowers – There is a new flower sign-up sheet for 2017 with instructions is posted in the Narthex. This covers the entire year. Please sign-up for your special two weeks. If you have more questions, please contact Lynn.
Church Quiz – Over the coming weeks we will have a “Church Quiz” as part of our announcements and e-News. All are invited to think about and answer the week’s question. Answers will be provided the following week.
Last week’s question and answer: Question: What is Reconciliation of a Penitent? Answer: Reconciliation of a Penitent, or Penance, is the rite in which those who repent of their sins may confess them to God in the presence of a priest, and receive the assurance of pardon and the grace of absolution. (BCP 861)
This week’s question: What is Unction of the Sick? Look for the answer next week.
Formation Classes – This week we will discuss our Old Testament reading Genesis 25:19-34, “’The Birth and Youth of Esau and Jacob’ and ‘Esau Sells His Birthright’.” Next week we will discuss our Old Testament reading Genesis 28:10-19a, “Jacob’s Dream at Bethel.” All are invited to join the conversation in the Parish Hall from 9:15 to 10:15 am.
Sunday’s Psalm – This Sunday we sing the portion of the Psalter together using a metrical version of the Psalter from A New Metrical Psalter by Christopher Webber as we sing Psalm 119:105-112 together. The Psalm will be set to Hymn 25, O gracious light (The Eighth Tune) from the Hymnal. The words and music will be found on a bulletin insert.
Hospitality hour Sign-up – The sign-up sheet is on the bulletin board; please sign-up for an upcoming Sunday. If you would like to help but cannot provide all the items for coffee hour/lemonade on the lawn any assistance, even a single item, will be graciously accepted.
Upcoming Parish Events – Jul 19 – Suffolk Wellness Coalition presentation of Chasing the Dragon; Jul 25 – Card Crafters; Jul 29 – Salvation Army Luncheon.
Thought for the week – Listen: For St. Benedict, as for the Old Testament prophets, the way of conversion was primarily through listening – carefully and deeply – with the ears of your heart – to the word of God. And in order to listen, we need to keep silence.
