Happy first Sunday in June and a beautiful day in southern Virginia. After a few tempestuous days today started bright and sunny. With the rain things have greened up nicely and the chestnut tree has become intoxicating again. We reintroduced singing this morning and hope to add more music in the coming months. The countdown has begun, if everything goes well we will be in the Sanctuary in a month (July 4) for our first worship in the sanctuary since March 2020. Enjoy the transition to summer and a continued return to less strict life in community.
In worship today we began by considering that God is the source of all good things and that by inspiring (breathing in) God we are able to think and act on the right things of life. By God’s grace we are also able to be guided in the right ways of life. Our Hebrew Scripture today was from the first book of Samuel and described the beginning of a new part of Jewish faith. The people turned from being led by Samuel and his sons to the installation of a human king (in place of God as king). Even though God warned otherwise they persisted, and got what they asked for. The psalmist reminds us to remember to give thanks for God’s presence and all that we have that comes from God’s grace. There is no reason to NOT sing praises to God. Our gospel from Mark introduced the premise that Jesus was not “in his right (earthly focused) mind” but was living the life ordained by God. Those who do God’s work are part of God’s family. Today’s sermon was focused on the second letter from Paul to the Corinthians. In our text today we remind ourselves that we relate what we believe and that our inner nature (heavenly focused) is renewed day by day. Each day is one that allows us to live for God with an eye on the eternity of our life of faith.
