Welcome to August from St. John’s in Chuckatuck. July went out like a lion with rain and wind, lots of mess around the church property and local community. Things are still going well at church, our attendance is picking up a little and we are still getting a good number of views on our post-production video on YouTube. Today was a day of firsts for our video production – a bump during communion had the camera pointed off-kilter. But we continued without significant issue. We pray you are well as the virus begins to resurface – please be careful and if you need anything let us know.

We heard the liturgist remind us in the collect that God’s mercy, help, and guidance is what keeps us safe in a world focused on itself. We need to remember to trust in God’s goodness that was shown in the person of Jesus Christ. Our reading from Hebrew scripture was the story of David and Bathsheba and the offense committed by David being called to account by Nathan. There was no way that David could hide his sin from God and his sin had consequences that were unexpected. Our Psalmist sings a song to remind us that it is God’s mercy that sustains us, God’s hesed (loving-kindness) that allows us to stand before God. Our epistle was from the letter to the Ephesians and described the diversity that must be present in a well-functioning body of believers. All we need to succeed is provided by God. Our gospel tells a story of the people tracking Jesus down, in theory to be fed, but Jesus realizes that the people are looking for a magic bullet to do God’s work. Jesus reminded them (and us) that the only thing we need to be successful is to trust God’s promises and to do the things we are equipped to do. Not everything, just what we are built to do.

Our future comes from being what we are created to be by God.
