Greetings to you on the Last Sunday after the Epiphany in 2022. Today was a “first” (actually second) for us since the Pandemic began and we recorded worship – the audio on the video this morning was garbled, even though the system was tested before worship. So there will be no video today. Even with the fits and starts of the last 7 weeks, it has been a fantastic journey this past Epiphany season and we look forward to the coming period of reflection and spiritual growth. Our prayers are offered for a quick and peaceful resolution to the invasion of the Ukraine. May God cover those who are in dangerous and life-threatening situations.
As we gathered to signal the last Sunday after the Epiphany, we prayed that we would recognize God’s presence as the light of our salvation and that we could be strengthened to stay the course that lies ahead. The Psalmist sang a song of the power of God and how we are responsible for proclaiming God’s greatness over and against the gods of humanity. They also reminded us that God will forgive us of our sin when we return to God. The second letter of Paul to the Corinthians was an encouragement that we shouldn’t lose heart when things look bleak, because God can (will) change things to strengthen those who trust in God’s providence. Our sermon today was based on both the gospel and Hebrew Scripture reading. The gospel story was Luke’s story of the transfiguration and healing of the epileptic child. That story closed with the statement, “And all were astounded at the greatness of God.” The lesson from Exodus recounted Moses’ second visit with God on the mountain and how he shone when he came back with the tablets. It also related that Moses took steps to remain connected to the Hebrews, even when they were scared by his shining from being in God’s presence.
We are reminded as we turn the corner to Lent that change has and will happen, no matter what. As witnesses of God’s greatness, we need to act like we aren’t astounded by God’s providence and engagement with humans. We are also called to meet those outside our community reflecting the love of God in Christ.
I invite your comments,
