Happy April from Chuckatuck. One quarter of the year is in the books and we are navigating the last weeks of our 2022 Lenten journey. Yesterday was a time to prepare the church yard for Palm Sunday and Easter – sticks picked up, the pond bank cleaned, and some spring cleaning in the Sanctuary. We are looking forward to Easter and hope to have a good community Easter Sunrise service at the pond altar, the first since 2019. May you be blessed in the remainder of your journey to Easter.
In worship, we asked to love what God commands and desire what God promises – to be steadfast in following God’s guidance and passionate about what God calls us to do. Our Psalmist sings a song praising God and how God has delivered the Israelites from their oppression. Because God has been faithful, God’s people need to honor God with their praise. Paul’s letter to the Philippians related the reminder that we cannot rest on what has passed but must continue to follow in Christ’s footsteps now that we have answered God’s call. Our gospel from John recounted the death and resuscitation of Lazarus with the pending death and resurrection of Jesus. Jesus reminded his people that his life didn’t change their responsibility, rather that he refocused their responsibility.
Our sermon was loosely based on the gospel and our reading from the prophet Isaiah in Hebrew Scripture. We are told that the things God has already done, while good, are not the best thing that God will do for us in the future. We need to live like the best is yet to come, because it is. Living the life that we have as people of God.
