Greetings after an unsettled week around Chuckatuck (and probably around most of the nation). We have been blessed with enough rain to have the wildflowers pop up a little more. The butterflies have been inhabiting the yard and I’m looking with anticipation for chrysalis and cocoons. Given those things, we are happily moving on into our summer session and pray you are well.

In worship we heard that the simple way we can keep God’s commandments is to love God and neighbor. We are invited to be united and joined with others in our community, looking for God’s presence in our world. Our lesson from Hebrew Scripture was the account of Abraham’s servant finding and bringing Rebekah to Isaac. We hear the exchange and commitment between people who are related yet separated by time and space. Our Psalmist sings a love song for us to echo. One which connects us to God the King and to the guidance and compassion that resides only in God. In Paul’s letter to the Romans he recounts that his strength keeps him from doing what he wants to do for God. He realizes that, left to his devices, he will always fail; but if he trusts in God’s providence, he will always be successful for God.

Today’s sermon was mostly based on the Gospel reading from Matthew that highlights the disconnect between those who have a sense of awe and wonder (the children) and those who know everything (the Pharisees/religious leaders). We are reminded that God’s wisdom survives and leads us to a place where we can trust God’s guidance. We need to not assume we “know” things about God, except that God’s grace is beyond understanding but is a free gift.
