Grace and peace to you from the Rector’s Study in muggy Chuckatuck on the Feast of the Transfiguration. July has turned to August and we give thanks for the abundance we have received, not just in the past month but over time. We are thankful for rain which has given us a surplus of rain for the year (so far) and has brought more new life to our community. We are still dealing with the hiccups of an aging Sanctuary but are coping well. We pray that the remainder of summer is productive for you and that God walks with you in August.

In worship we celebrated the Feast of the Transfiguration and were reminded that God chooses people to be witnesses of God’s grace and glory. The witness is not just for the mountain top but is for all to know, believe, and get hope that God is with us. In our Hebrew Scripture reading from Exodus we hear the story of Moses’ second journey up the mountain and how he was changed by his experience. We see that Moses change was noticed by his people more than it was by him. The Psalmist sang a song that reminds us that God rates all praise and awe because God is greater than we imagine and we must share that news. Our New Testament reading from 2nd Peter confirms the veracity of the Transfiguration and how that empowers us to share the news, even if we are secondhand witnesses.

Our sermon was based on the gospel reading from Luke which lays out the Transfiguration of Jesus on the mountain to Peter, James, and John. We hear God tell the disciples the truth and the disciples respond in a human but empowered way. We are reminded through the description of the Transfiguration that God will deliver God’s people from slavery to sin no matter how many times that might be. God delivers God’s people again, and again, and again. And that is the good news.

I invite your comments,
Les+
