Blessings to you at the beginning of Daylight Saving Time and the observation of Winter III. The daffodils were a little nonplussed that it snowed yesterday and in the 20s overnight. But we gathered to worship on the 2nd Sunday in Lent and continue our Lenten journey of reflection and consideration of where God is calling us to set our “stuff” aside. Hopefully this weekend will allow us to turn the corner toward spring but we’ll have to wait and see. Happy St. Patrick’s Day on Friday – enjoy the green.
In worship we heard the reminder that’s God’s glory, the way God’s grace shines, is through the mercy we are given. Yet that mercy isn’t without some cost, we have to return from going astray and forgetting God’s unchangeable truth. Our Psalmist sang the song to remind us that God is our light, and if we focus on God there is no person who should cause us fear. Even when we think we’re going to be overrun, our eternal nature will survive. Paul’s letter to the Philippians offered a glimpse into how we should model our lives. True community and faith focus on the things that are not of this world, but instead focuses on the eternal nature. The gospel from Luke issues the reminder that there is a time for everything in God’s realm, a way that things work in the greater realm that is God’s kingdom.
Our sermon was focused on our lesson from Hebrew scripture taken from Genesis. In the story today, we hear Abram play the “but what if…” game with God. Even when God reminds Abram of the faithful promises already offered and received by Abram, he still questions whether he will “succeed” (at least in his terms). God’s covenant with Abram is one where God reaches out in a radical and very human level. God stays engaged with Abram and reassures him of the promises offered and delivered upon. Abram’s, and our, response is to look at and share the things that get in our way, give them to God, and look for God’s guiding grace. Because, that grace will be there.
