Greetings as we approach the middle of June in soggy Suffolk VA. It has been a bit rainy these past 2 weeks and the lawn folks have been rained out which has let the yard green up quite a bit. The chestnut is blooming with gusto and our ocean of milkweed is back. Lots of activity on the church grounds. In worship, we greeted some members who have been away in person during the pandemic. We are moving smartly towards the return to the sanctuary on July 4. We pray you are safe and well as summer hits in earnest.
Our worship today began with singing and a reminder that God keeps the Church focused on God’s faith and love – not by our actions but by our appreciation of God’s grace. Because we know God’s grace we are called to tell God’s truth and minister God’s justice for all. Our Hebrew Scripture was taken from the 1st letter of Samuel and described David’s call to be the leader of Israel after Saul turned away from God’s guidance. David was an unlikely leader but God knows a person’s heart. Our psalmist reminds us that God is present, in trouble and in prosperity and that if we trust God’s providence we will recognize what our true heart desires. Our gospel reading from Mark told the story of the unseen growth of seeds in God’s economy and the abundance that is there to be had if we follow God. Our sermon was focused on the reading from Paul’s 2nd letter to the Corinthians. Paul reminds us that our confidence comes from God and not from our power or prowess. Paul also reminds us that whether we live or die we are never out of God’s love and grace. Finally, we have been assured that if we are in Christ there is a new creation – day-by-day. It is our job to live that life. Where are you being invited to live today?
