Nearing the halfway point in November, greetings from Chuckatuck on a bright sunny Sunday. We are getting ready for our Thanksgiving celebration in a couple weeks and the end of the Liturgical year next Sunday. Between summer/fall part 3 with heat, rain, humidity, and winds. But there are hints of late fall that appear in falling leaves and squirrels packing nuts away for winter. We are thankful for the Veterans in our congregation and community – they have helped make us what we are.
In our worship today we hear our yearly reminder that the Scripture recorded in the bible caused to be written by God. As we live our life of faith, all these years later, when we become intimate with Scripture we will find everlasting life. In our Hebrew Scripture reading from the prophet Isaiah there is the reminder that God is or will create a new earth which resets creation to the place it was in the beginning. The work we do in this moment will not be for naught – we will dwell with God in eternity. The response of Canticle 9 (from Isaiah 12) sings the song that God is the only one who can truly save us and that we, along with other faithful ones, will be found in God’s holy city. The Epistle from Paul’s second letter to the Thessalonians tells us to not live idly but to keep working towards the place that God calls us. Likewise, we are told to not be weary when we do what is right. In our gospel reading we hear Jesus remind those who pay attention that the signs we seek may not be the signs that are the true omen of the future. We need to live attuned to God’s presence and promises.
Our sermon helps us investigate and consider how we care called to trust the truth of Scripture – that God creates us new every day and is intimately connected with us. While we may not always see the truth in the world, remembering God’s truth is there when we look for it with intent.
I invite your comments,
