Greetings from drizzly Chuckatuck on Memorial Day weekend. I encourage you to take a moment and remember those who have given the ultimate sacrifice in the service of our nation. I also invite you to remember those who continue to give the ultimate sacrifice for the life of faith in the promises given by God. We celebrate the weekend and the blessing we receive which allows us to pause. We reach forward to those who need to hear God’s redeeming message of hope and grace. May the coming week be filled with signs of God’s gracious presence.
In worship today we celebrate the Day of Pentecost – 50 days after Easter and the commemoration of Moses receiving the law at Sinai after the Exodus. We are reminded that God opened the way to eternal life to all people and all nations by the gift given through the Holy Spirit. All are included in God’s family across time and space. Our first reading today was taken from Acts and is the recounting of the first Pentecost, the day when the Holy Spirit came upon the believers as tongues of fire. The Psalmist sang a song of remembrance which serves as a reminder that God’s great works are innumerable and beyond compare. Because we receive God’s gift, we must give thanks and praise. The gospel reading from John was the story of Jesus breathing the Holy Spirit on the Disciples in the upper room after his crucifixion.
Today’s sermon was based on the reading from Paul’s letter to the Corinthian church. In this reading Paul offers the reminder that the gifts given by God through the Holy Spirit are all necessary for a properly functioning community of faith. And Paul reminds us that the gifts are all good and all necessary; there isn’t one gift that is better than another as long as they are used to build the body. Our mission is to discern and build the body through the indwelling of the Holy Spirit.
I invite your comments,
